Culture Is Our Business
This was the image I used to represent my 'Found', collection of soundbites CD in 1996. I had a lot of help with this image from my friend and photographer extraordinaire, Ed Giunca.
James Phillips would have taken the photo. His handy work (the z's) written in the still-developing Polaroid.
These were the days when The Wild Blue Yonder was playing Lingerie and The Central. Bob and Maryann had an awesome Hollywood crib where they were filming the 'Couch Concert' series. Their band, Hollywood Wing Rats, were gigging as well. To keep a roof over our heads a bunch of us, including Danny Carey, were working in the AV Rentals section of Ametron. Oh man, these were some fun and crazy times.
Didn't know about this! Frank would have been almost 70 when he recorded this and he sounds great! And what a band! George Benson and the Brecker Brothers, just to mention a few. (I haven't watched the whole doc yet but the IMDB cast list seems a little off, at least it doesn't mention Ray Brown on bass.) Watch it on Amazon.

Odd measures, key changes, complex chord changes. And great bass playing! It was written by Michael Mercer and Gerry Goffin. First recorded in 1973 by Thelma Houston!

The D.E.A (Drug Enforcement Agency) sets caps on the amounts of schedule 1 and 2 drugs that manufacturers can legally produce each year. I was curious to see how the caps had changed over time and it was relatively simple to discover via the Federal Register. Considering all the lawsuits now targeting pharmaceutical manufacturers like Purdue, Johnson & Johnson, Allergen and Teva, I wonder if the D.E.A could also be considered an actor in the current opioid epidemic.

In the cryptic note at the top right (on p. 2), McLuhan writes to Harley Parker, with whom he later co-authored Through the Vanishing Point: Space in Poetry and Painting (1968) and Counterblast (1969). Parker also appears with McLuhan in the 28 min 1969 film Picnic in Space, directed by Bruce Bacon.
This text reflects McLuhan's then-coalescing thought as it relates to both education and to multiple media forms; and the text serves as relatively direct and clearly-written precursor for the 1964 Understanding Media.
