    I like the part about "the pain of paying". It seems a bit of disconnect preserves our identity, i.e., 'i deserve this purchase' despite the reality that you don't really have the cash to justify it. Then, when time to pay, this disconnect collapses, and pain occurs.

    It's like McLuhan's amputee/phantom pain theory. When lopped off, the "limb" still hurts.
